Dad\u2019s Life Lesson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Growing\n up in Fremont Ohio, my dad instilled something in my four sisters and I\n so strongly, it\u2019s still with us every single day. His golden rule of \n\u201cif you aren\u2019t early, you\u2019re late!\u201d was to him a key life lesson. (And \nby early, he meant by at least \u00bd hour!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Sunday morning 8 am mass. \nChurch was maybe an 8-minute drive away, yet we were all loaded in the \ncar and backing out of the driveway by 7:30 am. Without fail. If we \nweren\u2019t early, we were late. My dad hated, and hates, to be rushed. \n(Side note: His love of ironing, which did not get instilled in me, just\n proves that point!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This \u201cbe early\u201d lesson has followed me throughout life. I\u2019ve been early for everything<\/em> in my life. Jobs. Interviews. Parties. Church. School functions. You name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Being \u201cEarly\u201d (On Time) Has Taught Me<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1.\n Being in a rushed mentality is an awful way to live because the chaos \nof a rushed mentality overflows into every other aspect of your day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2. An \u201cahead of time\u201d mentality has allowed me to develop my own Perpetual-State-of-Preparedness<\/em> processes that allow me to (most times) completely avoid #1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\n I was to be on the job at 8, you can bet I was there by 7:30 \u2013 dressed \nand ready to roll. I needed to set the parameters for my own day. Why \nnot give myself a little space, time for a few deep breaths? Then I\u2019m \nprepared to start promptly at 8:00 and feel confident in the fact that I\n am running my day; not the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Gift to Myself<\/h2>\n\n\n

Did\n I expect to get paid for showing up \u201cearly\u201d (on time)? Never. Really. \nThe thought never entered my mind. No one asked me to be early. I was \ndoing this for myself. That\u2019s part of the way dad\u2019s lesson really \nimpacts all of life. The being early mentality set me up for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\n do not understand how, when someone\u2019s \u201cshift\u201d is 8 to 5, they come \nrolling into the parking lot at 7:59, only to rush in the door and \ntotally scramble their day away. And if they are standing at the time \nclock at 8 am with their coat on, it\u2019s guaranteed they are not starting \ntheir \u201cwork\u201d promptly. I\u2019ve seen people show up at 7:55, thinking they \nare \u201cearly.\u201d So what do they do? Clock in and go put on some makeup, \nbecause they didn\u2019t have time at home. Or grab something to eat quick. \nYou read that right. They clock in first!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prepping Time Leads to Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Clocking\n in should never be the absolute beginning of anyone\u2019s work day. The \nabsolute beginning is the prepping. First you get ready, then you get \nset, then at your 8 o\u2019clock start time, you\u2019re ready to go. If your job \nstarts at 8:00, that means being in your position, ready to fire sharply\n at 8:00! This is all part of the whole life lesson my parents gifted to\n me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By teaching me that on time means being early, they set me up\n for success. Getting to my job half an hour early meant I was prepping \nmyself so when I was on the clock I could do the best job ever.<\/em> Prep\n time is an investment in myself, in my own success! If I can\u2019t invest \nin my own success by prepping for a perfect day, how could I expect \nanyone else to invest in me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no way I was going to start\n behind the eight ball and have it rolling after me all day! I wasn\u2019t \ngoing to start my day out scrambling. That would be setting myself up \nfor a day of never<\/em> getting ahead. You know that\u2019s what happens.\n You rush through the whole day, only to be so behind by quitting time, \nthat now, you are scrambling to make sure you are able to clock out \nright at 5! (Staying until the job is complete is for another life \nlesson we can discuss later.) But just think, if you would just invest \nyour time and energies to better preparing your day for success, your \nend of the day mayhem could have been avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above and Beyond Expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Did anyone expect me to be \u201cearly\u201d (on time in the Frampton world)? No! I expected it of myself. For<\/em> myself. I want<\/em> to exceed. I want to shine. If you give me a goal, I smash it<\/em>. And yes, even if it means using my own time to get myself there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does this mean I couldn\u2019t get the job done in the time allowed? That the expectations were too great?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.\n It simply means that I set myself up every day for success. I \nautomatically carved out \u201ccush\u201d time, just in case something went awry. \nThat way I was mentally prepared for my \u201cnormal\u201d day. And that mental \nsettledness gave my mind and energies space to better embrace any \nemergencies or chaos that might develop throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dad\u2019s Lesson Impacts All of Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\n could slop through a day. And yes, some days it might have been fine. \nBut others, I might have wanted to cry before the day was over. Slop<\/em> in any area of your life leads to sloppy thoughts, sloppy execution, and running in circles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\n firmly believe if you start your day out prepared, you end the day with\n satisfaction. And that\u2019s true no matter how hectic the day might have \nbeen in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are so many negative comments in public \nforums about not having time to get jobs done, how the bosses are mean, \nhow a team member got yelled at for not being prepared. I just want to \nrepeat for them Dad\u2019s life lesson: \u201cif you aren\u2019t early, you\u2019re late!\u201d \nAnd I want to ask them: \u201cWhat have you invested of<\/em> yourself, and given to<\/em> yourself to excel? What have you personally done to elevate yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe me, no one<\/em> is going to be interested in elevating you if you<\/em> aren\u2019t\n interested enough to elevate yourself. Commit to making your own day \nbetter. Start out by coming in a bit earlier and prep for your day. Watch what happens.<\/em><\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do\n you want to be elevated within your current position? Do you wish for \nwage increases, growth opportunities, more time off, and the fabulous \nfeeling of a job well done? Earn it.<\/em> By learning. Invest in yourself. Invest your own<\/em> time in order to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn to be organized. Regulate your daily processes and your thoughts. Elevation and wage increases do not<\/em> just happen because you punch a time clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start\n implementing this life lesson in everyday routines. While my dad taught\n me to always be prepared, my mom did too, in her own way. Like \ntri-folding bath towels in a specific way that made the closet always \nlook neat and organized. And making our beds as soon as we got up every \nday. To this day, I make my bed every single morning without fail. I \nstart my day out and end my day as I want. And what I want is to not be \nrushed or hit with chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask my four girls. I\u2019m passing this \nlesson for life on to them too. They may hate it now, but like me, they \nare going to be so glad their parents gave them this beautiful gift.
